Thermo-solar power stations convert solar energy to heat, which can be used for the production of electricity. Heat storage in these stations makes use of molten salts potassium and sodium nitrate. A mixture of molten potassium nitrate and sodium nitrate is an excellent heat-transfer medium for solar-powered steam generators. The salts are not only efficient at transferring heat, but are also ideal for storing thermal energy that allows operators to run turbines also at night or on cloudy days.
